THE DISCIPLINE OF SPORT, APPLIED TO BUSINESS
While preparing for the Olympic Games in Athens, after being crowned four-time Spanish equestrian champion and winning bronze at the European Eventing Championships, Kike suffered a back injury in a fall. It would have been his fourth Olympics, all of them marked by earning an Olympic diploma. His philosophy and worldview are deeply rooted in sport: there is no such thing as success or failure—only hard work, perseverance, and the determination to rise again in pursuit of new goals.

Birth and International Expansion
Room Mate Hotels began its journey in 2005 with the opening of Mario in Madrid, driven by the desire to revive the magic of travel. At Room Mate, we believe the best way to experience a city is by visiting a friend—so each hotel becomes your friend in the city. With their unique names and personalities, each hotel transforms your trip into an unforgettable experience. Just like no two friends are the same, no two Room Mate hotels are alike. Every property is crafted by renowned international interior designers, ensuring each stay is one-of-a-kind.
In 2006, we inaugurated Alicia, followed by Oscar in Madrid and Larios in Malaga in 2007. In 2008, after opening Leo in Granada, we took our first international steps with Grace in New York and Waldorf in Miami. In 2009, Emma arrived in Barcelona. Throughout our growth, we’ve remained true to what defines us: prime locations, unique design, and above all, the warmth and closeness of our Room Mate family.

New cities, same philosophy
In 2012, we expanded further into Europe with the opening of Isabella and Luca in Florence, and Aitana in Amsterdam, all while continuing our commitment to adapt to the evolving needs of our guests. This dedication has led us to be the first hotel chain to offer breakfast until noon and free late check-out.
Moreover, we became pioneers in providing free Wi-Fi not only within our hotels but throughout the entire city via our WiMate service. This innovative approach earned us several prestigious awards, including Best Innovation in Digital Sales & Marketing at the Worldwide Hospitality Awards in 2015, as well as the award for Best Customer Experience Strategy that same year.

Innovation and design on the rise
In 2015, Room Mate continued its expansion in Barcelona with the introduction of Carla, followed by Anna in 2016 and Gerard in 2017. The chain also grew with the opening of Valeria in Malaga in 2015. That same year, the vibrant city of Milan welcomed Giulia, while 2017 marked significant growth with the arrival of Emir in Istanbul and Bruno in Rotterdam.
In 2018, Gorka brought Room Mate's distinctive touch to San Sebastian, and in 2019, Alain opened his doors in Paris, further enhancing our presence across Europe. Each new hotel, with its unique personality, contributes to our mission of delivering memorable experiences in iconic cities throughout the continent.

Adaptation and future
In 2020, we opened Macarena in the heart of Madrid’s Gran Vía, reaffirming our commitment to exceptional design and prime locations.
In 2022, the company was acquired by Angelo Gordon, a global investment firm specializing in real estate and credit strategies with over 25 years of experience, and Westmont Hospitality Group. This acquisition has accelerated our expansion, allowing us to add two remarkable properties to our portfolio in 2023: Lime Tree in London and Palazzo dei Fiori in Venice.
In 2024, we undertook renovations of some of our most iconic hotels in cities such as Amsterdam, Florence, and Granada, ensuring our commitment to excellence and providing unique stays. Additionally, we welcomed Staying Valencia, expanding our portfolio by 10 new assets, including the award-winning Helen Berger Hotel.
Our dedication to people, design, location, technology, and guest well-being is reflected in our brand's strong reputation. We proudly have the highest-rated hotels compared to our competitors in Rome, Milan, Barcelona, Madrid, San Sebastián, and Valencia. Furthermore, we solidified our position as one of the most highly rated urban hotel chains according to Booking, earning the award for the Most Welcoming Hotel Chain in Spain in 2023.
